PROJECT

Design Sprint Workshops

SUMMARY

Approaching a problem is never easy. Design Sprints opened up a new way of thinking about problems and opportunities and I wanted to lead the way at Jet. Bringing a cross of teams together created a new sense of inclusion so everyone could have a hand in solutions.

ISSUE

The primary issue was a vacuum of ideas coming from a few sources and many times vetting solutions vs. solving true problems. Additionally, many voices felt left out of the process and did not know how to participate with Product, Design and/or Tech.

SOLUTION

I jumped at the opportunity to lead workshops that began as simple brainstorms, but eventually were formalized as Design Sprints. Having utilized them at my previous job, I went a step further to lean the formal process of Design Sprints as outlined by Jake Knapp (creator while at Google)

The following images are from various design sprint exercises over the last couple of years.

DESIGN SPRINT WORKSHOP WITH JAKE KNAPP

I found a Design Sprint workshop in Brooklyn hosted by the creator himself Jake Knapp. I recruited to PM's and we 3 set off to learn how to moderate a formal sprint along with 200 other designers, PM's and engineers.

DESIGN SPRINT: Order Modifications

In this sprint, I moderated a 3-day "mini sprint" to help the Jet's Checkout team determine how users could possibly modify placed orders.

DESIGN SPRINT: App Category Navigation

In this sprint, I co-moderated a sprint to help determine an approach to category browsing within Jet's native app experience.

DESIGN SPRINT: Health & Beauty Category

In this sprint, I moderated a self-created "mini sprint" which consisted of a 3-day condensed version of the formal 5 day sprint. In this sprint, the focus was to determine a category experience path for the Health & Beauty categories.

CONCLUSION

The integration of the inclusive Design Sprint at Jet has been met with both praise and appreciation. I have now run over 10 various Design Sprints and "Mini Sprints" with a variety of teams and projects. My intention of opening up new voices and ideas has taken off and there is a renewed sense of opportunity each time a sprint is scheduled.

A great by-product of running sprints has been the relationship building between Design and other teams throughout the business. By running sprints and workshops, colleagues have a deeper appreciation for Design Thinking as well as respect for Design in general. I'm proud to represent my Design org in such a visual and vocal way.

Overall, there are multiple Design Sprint moderators running sessions per their project needs. Several of us who attended Jake Knapp's workshop have co-moderated together and shared the knowledge we gained. The investment to listen to different parts of the business and intake their ideas has seen multiple new initiatives and features be built and launch to the product Jet.com site.
